Why PRRS Inspection Training Matters

Pallet racking and cantilever racking operate under constant load and daily impact, so damage is not a question of if, but when. A trained Person Responsible for Rack Safety (PRRS) is the key control point: identifying damage early, recording it correctly, and ensuring it is managed before it escalates into a safety risk.

UK guidance from the Health and Safety Executive in HSG76 – Warehousing and Storage: A Guide to Health and Safety makes it clear that racking defects must be reported and that inspections should be carried out at regular intervals based on risk assessment, supported by formal written inspection records.

PRRS training ensures this responsibility is clearly assigned, competently managed, and defensibly documented.

Key Business Benefits of PRRS Training

Warehouse racking failures rarely happen without warning — they happen when damage goes unnoticed, unreported, or misunderstood and good racking maintenance is neglected. PRRS training ensures you have a competent person on site who knows what to look for and what corrective action to take.

Key business benefits:

  • Reduced risk of racking collapse through early damage identification
  • Improved compliance with HSE expectations and industry guidance
  • Clear inspection records to demonstrate due diligence
  • Less downtime caused by avoidable racking failures
  • Better-informed teams understand how damage occurs and how to prevent it

By training a nominated PRRS, you are not replacing annual expert inspections; you are strengthening the safety net between them.

Who This Course Is For

PRRS Racking Inspection Training is designed for the person or people responsible for carrying out regular in-house racking checks and reporting damage correctly between annual expert inspections. It is ideal for businesses that want a clearly assigned Person Responsible for Rack Safety (PRRS) on site, supported by practical training and a structured inspection approach.

This course is well suited to:

  • Warehouse managers responsible for day-to-day storage safety
  • Supervisors and team leaders overseeing racking use and reporting damage
  • Health and safety personnel involved in compliance and internal inspections
  • Operations managers who need confidence in site inspection routines
  • Order pickers and warehouse operatives with responsibility for identifying and reporting damage
  • Anyone nominated as the PRRS for pallet racking or cantilever racking systems

No previous inspection experience is required. The training is designed to build practical knowledge, confidence and consistency in how in-house racking inspections are carried out and recorded.

What does HSE say?

HSG76 Warehouse and Storage – A guide to health & Safety (Second edition, published 2007)

643: As soon as a safety problem or damage is observed by any employee, it should immediately be reported to the PRRS. You should have systems in place for reporting damage and defects

645: The ‘Person Responsible for Rack Safety’ should ensure that inspections are made at weekly or other regular intervals based on risk assessment. A formal written record should be maintained.

So what should you do?

In order to maintain the functionality and safety of a racking installation, it is important to conduct regular inspections of the storage equipment.

The frequency of these inspections should be determined by a designated ‘person responsible for racking safety’ (PRRS) based on the specific factors of the site and tailored to the operational conditions of the warehouse.

In conclusion, it is essential for every operation to have a certified ‘PRRS’ present on site in order to carry out regular in-house inspections and promptly address any issues or damage that may arise.

Inspection Training vs Maintenance Training

This course is designed to build competence in internal racking inspections, helping your nominated PRRS carry out regular checks, identify damage correctly and support ongoing rack safety between annual expert inspections.

If you need training in safe remedial works, component replacement or the correct maintenance of damaged racking, please see our Racking Maintenance Training page.

What Delegates Will Learn

By the end of the racking inspection training, your PRRS will be able to:

  • Identify key racking components and why they matter structurally
  • Spot common damage types (uprights, baseplates, beams, bracing, floor fixings and beam safety locks)
  • Apply the Red / Amber / Green SEMA approach to damage classification (and what to do next)
  • Check load notices and loading configuration basics
  • Run a structured in-house inspection and produce a clear written record with photos
  • Escalate correctly: what needs monitoring vs repair vs immediate action

What Candidates Receive

At the end of the training, the candidate will receive the following:

  • PRRS certificate
  • Practical inspection checklist
  • Inspection record template, simple, audit-friendly
  • “What good looks like” photo examples for your noticeboard / toolbox talks
