Racking Awareness Training Courses

Our Racking Awareness Training plays a vital role in keeping warehouse racking safe, compliant, and serviceable. The purpose of the course is to ensure you have a trained and certified Person Responsible for Rack Safety (PRRS) on site in line with HSE recommendations, capable of carrying out regular in-house inspections between annual expert racking inspections, to enable sites to respond promptly and correctly if damage occurs in the meantime.

The training is suitable for anyone involved in racking operations — from warehouse managers and supervisors to team leaders and order pickers, because racking safety is a shared responsibility, and informed teams are far more likely to identify issues early.

On successful completion of the course, your nominated PRRS will be certified for a period of three years to carry out internal racking inspections alongside the professional level annual inspection conducted by a Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association-approved racking inspector.

All courses are delivered nationwide at your site, eliminating the need for multiple delegates to travel and allowing the training to be tailored to your specific racking layout, equipment, and operating environment.

Courses are available for both pallet racking and cantilever racking, providing delegates with the knowledge and practical skills required to carry out inspections confidently throughout the year. Training includes:

  • Health and safety requirements for racking inspections
  • Relevant SEMA Codes of Practice
  • SEMA damage classifications (Red / Amber / Green)
  • Written learning supported by practical, on-site inspection exercises

Get in touch today to find out how we can strengthen your team’s racking knowledge, improve inspection confidence, and support ongoing warehouse safety.

Why PRRS training matters

Pallet racking and cantilever racking operate under constant load and daily impact, so damage is not a question of if, but when. A trained Person Responsible for Rack Safety (PRRS) is the key control point: identifying damage early, recording it correctly, and ensuring it is managed before it escalates into a safety risk.

UK guidance from the Health and Safety Executive in HSG76 – Warehousing and Storage: A Guide to Health and Safety makes it clear that racking defects must be reported and that inspections should be carried out at regular intervals based on risk assessment, supported by formal written inspection records.

PRRS training ensures this responsibility is clearly assigned, competently managed, and defensibly documented.

Why invest in PRRS Racking Awareness Training?

Warehouse racking failures rarely happen without warning — they happen when damage goes unnoticed, unreported, or misunderstood and good racking maintenance is neglected. PRRS training ensures you have a competent person on site that knows what to look for and what corrective action to take.

Key business benefits:

  • Reduced risk of racking collapse through early damage identification
  • Improved compliance with HSE expectations and industry guidance
  • Clear inspection records to demonstrate due diligence
  • Less downtime caused by avoidable racking failures
  • Better-informed teams understand how damage occurs and how to prevent it

By training a nominated PRRS, you are not replacing annual expert inspections — you are strengthening the safety net between them.

What does HSE say?

HSG76 Warehouse and Storage – A guide to health & Safety (Second edition, published 2007)

643: As soon as a safety problem or damage is observed by any employee, it should immediately be reported to the PRRS. You should have systems in place for reporting damage and defects

645: The ‘Person Responsible for Rack Safety’ should ensure that inspections are made at weekly or other regular intervals based on risk assessment. A formal written record should be maintained.

So what should you do?

In order to maintain the functionality and safety of a racking installation, it is important to conduct regular inspections of the storage equipment.

The frequency of these inspections should be determined by a designated ‘person responsible for racking safety’ (PRRS) based on the specific factors of the site and tailored to the operational conditions of the warehouse.

In conclusion, it is essential for every operation to have a certified ‘PRRS’ present on site in order to carry out regular in-house inspections and promptly address any issues or damage that may arise.

Do we legally need a PRRS?

HSE guidance in HSG76 recommends a nominated PRRS and regular recorded inspections based on risk.

HSG76 indicates weekly or other regular intervals based on risk assessment, with a formal written record.

No, PRRS inspections support safe operation between expert inspections. Expert inspections should be carried out by a technically competent person at suitable intervals, commonly referenced as at least every 12 months.
