Cantilever racking

Cantilever racks are typically used to store longer, heavier, or more awkward loads that cannot be stored in standard pallet racking, such as sheet materials, timber, pipes, and other oversized goods. For businesses in Worcester, ensuring these systems remain safe is essential to maintaining compliance and operational efficiency.

Due to the heavier loads and increased impact risks associated with cantilever racking, the likelihood of structural issues rises if issues are not identified early. Our qualified cantilever racking inspectors undertake thorough inspections to spot defects, flag risks, and make you aware of any concerns before they lead to failure.

During the inspection, our inspector will assess your racking system in detail to help keep your site safe, compliant, and fit for purpose. With in-depth sector knowledge, we can also offer guidance on damage prevention to help avoid repeat issues, helping your business avoid unnecessary downtime and loss of revenue.

Cantilever Racking Inspections FAQs

Why do I need to have a cantilever racking inspection in Worcester?

Racking and storage equipment is covered by PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) and is expected to be assessed at least annually by a qualified professional, something a SEMA-approved inspector is qualified to carry out.

HSE publications also reinforce the need for annual inspections, including:

  • HSG76 – Warehousing and storage – A guide to health and safety
  • Workplace health, safety and welfare regulations 1992

An annual racking inspection will help ensure that your racking has been installed to manufacturer specifications, has appropriate weight loading information displayed, is suitable and used as intended for its current application, and is in a fit state for continued use.

  • We will ensure the compatibility and suitability of your storage equipment
  • Fully Approved Inspectors as recognised by the HSE
  • We undertake comprehensive inspections, providing a fully detailed report with identified issues and required corrective actions
  • Supporting your business in meeting Health & Safety and PUWER requirements
  • Verify your racking has been installed in line with manufacturer guidelines
  • Check load notices are accurate and reflect current racking configurations
  • Highlight areas prone to recurring damage capturing issues before replacement components are required
  • Evaluate pallet condition and load suitability on site
  • Offer guidance on rack-related health and safety issues, keeping you up to date with regulations
  • Give an in-depth specification of the storage equipment
  • Detailed post-inspection debrief with clear guidance and access to findings

The answer is no.

We always recommend requesting the inspector’s SARI number, which is an individual ID assigned to each SEMA-approved inspector. This should be clearly shown on your racking inspection report.

Some inspectors provide damage-only style reports under PUWER. This type of inspection can lead to gaps in compliance, as important installation checks and health and safety issues may be missed.

In our opinion, if you are looking for a racking inspector, why choose a limited report when you can receive a complete assessment from a SEMA-approved inspector?

An annual racking inspection is recommended, and also when racking systems have been relocated or reconfigured.

If repairs or installations are carried out by a non-SEMA-approved installer (SEIRS), it is advised that a full inspection is carried out before the system is put back into use to ensure it has been completed in line with requirements.

Alongside yearly inspections, internal inspections should be conducted by competent staff at set intervals throughout the year.

Staff carrying out inspections should be trained through a recognised course and have a certified level of competence. They can then carry out your internal inspections, which should be documented to satisfy auditor requirements and HSE expectations.
