Cantilever racks are typically used to store long-length and bulky materials that are not suited to standard pallet racking, such as sheet materials, timber, pipes, and other oversized goods. For businesses in Solihull, ensuring these systems remain safe is critical to maintaining compliance and operational efficiency.

Due to the heavier loads and increased impact risks associated with cantilever racking, the risk of significant damage increases if issues are not identified early. Our qualified cantilever racking inspectors perform in-depth evaluations to identify damage, highlight areas of concern, and ensure you are aware of any issues before they become serious problems.

Throughout the inspection, our inspector will assess your racking system in detail to help keep your site fully compliant and in good condition. With extensive industry experience, we can also offer guidance on damage prevention to reduce the risk of future damage, helping your business avoid unnecessary downtime and loss of revenue.

Cantilever Racking Inspections FAQs

Why do I need to have a cantilever racking inspection in Solihull?

Racking and storage equipment is covered by PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) and is expected to be inspected at least annually by a suitably trained individual, of which a SEMA-approved inspector satisfies this requirement.

This requirement is further supported by HSE guidance, including:

  • HSG76 – Warehousing and storage – A guide to health and safety
  • Workplace health, safety and welfare regulations 1992

An annual racking inspection will help ensure that your racking has been installed correctly in line with manufacturer guidance, has clear weight loading information displayed, is suitable and used as intended for its current application, and is in a good serviceable condition.

  • Ensuring your storage equipment is suitable and fit for purpose
  • Fully Approved Inspectors as recognised by the HSE
  • We carry out an in-depth inspection process to provide you with a fully detailed report with locations and remedial actions listed
  • Supporting your business in meeting Health & Safety and PUWER requirements
  • Confirm your racking installation meets manufacturer specifications
  • Ensure load notices are in line and relevant to the racking’s current configurations
  • Offer guidance on areas that may be showing signs of repetitive damage helping prevent the need for replacement components
  • Assess the pallet and pallet load suitability on site
  • Provide advice on racking-related health and safety matters to keep you compliant
  • Deliver a full breakdown of your racking system specifications
  • Complete client debrief after the inspection with guidance and findings explained

The answer is no.

It is important to ask for the inspector’s SARI accreditation number, which is a unique identification number assigned to each SEMA-approved inspector. This should be included on your racking inspection report.

In addition, there are PUWER racking inspectors who offer damage report-only inspections. We believe this approach raises concerns around compliance, as important installation checks and health and safety issues may be missed.

In our opinion, if you are looking for a racking inspector, why accept a surface-level inspection when you can receive a comprehensive inspection from a competent inspector?

Racking inspections should be carried out at least once per year, and also when racking systems have been moved or altered.

In cases where work has been undertaken by installers who are not SEMA-approved (SEIRS), it is recommended that a full inspection is carried out before the system is returned to operation to ensure it has been completed in line with requirements.

Alongside yearly inspections, in-house inspections should also be carried out by competent staff at set intervals throughout the year.

Personnel responsible should complete racking awareness training and have a proven level of competency. They can then undertake your internal inspections, which should be logged to satisfy auditor requirements and HSE expectations.
