Cantilever racking

Cantilever racks are typically used to store oversized, heavy or irregular items that are not suited to standard pallet racking, such as sheet materials, timber, pipes, and other oversized goods. For businesses in Oxford, maintaining these systems correctly is critical to meeting compliance requirements and avoiding risk.

Due to the heavier loads and increased impact risks associated with cantilever racking, the likelihood of structural issues rises if issues are not identified early. Our qualified cantilever racking inspectors carry out detailed assessments to identify damage, highlight areas of concern, and ensure you are aware of any issues before they become serious problems.

During the inspection, our inspector will review your cantilever racks comprehensively to help keep your site safe, compliant, and fit for purpose. With years of hands-on experience, we can also recommend preventative actions to reduce the risk of future damage, helping your business reduce costly downtime and operational delays.

Cantilever Racking Inspections FAQs

Why do I need to have a cantilever racking inspection in Oxford?

Racking and storage equipment is governed by PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) and is expected to be checked at least annually by a suitably trained individual, of which a SEMA-approved inspector satisfies this requirement.

This requirement is further supported by HSE guidance, including:

  • HSG76 – Warehousing and storage – A guide to health and safety
  • Workplace health, safety and welfare regulations 1992

An annual racking inspection will ensure that your racking has been installed to manufacturer specifications, has clear weight loading information displayed, is suitable and used as intended for its current application, and is in a safe and serviceable condition.

  • We assess the compatibility and suitability of your storage systems
  • HSE-recognised approved inspectors
  • We carry out an in-depth inspection process to provide you with a fully detailed report with clear locations and recommended remedial actions
  • Supporting your business in meeting Health & Safety and PUWER requirements
  • Verify your racking has been installed in line with manufacturer guidelines
  • Check load notices are accurate and reflect current racking configurations
  • Highlight areas prone to recurring damage helping prevent the need for replacement components
  • Check pallets and loads are suitable for your racking system
  • Offer guidance on rack-related health and safety issues, keeping you up to date with regulations
  • Provide a detailed specification of your storage equipment
  • Complete client debrief after the inspection with guidance and findings explained

No, this is not the case.

We always recommend requesting the inspector’s SARI number, which is a recognised identifier assigned to each SEMA-approved inspector. This should also be visible on your racking inspection report.

You may also come across PUWER inspectors offering damage-only reports. We believe this approach raises concerns around compliance, as important installation checks and health and safety issues may be missed.

Our view is simple, if you are looking for a racking inspector, why settle for a basic overview when you can receive a complete assessment from a competent inspector?

A racking inspection should be undertaken on an annual basis, as well as when racking systems have been relocated or altered.

Where repairs or installations have been completed by non-SEMA-approved installers (SEIRS), it is recommended that a thorough assessment is carried out before the system is returned to operation to ensure it has been installed or repaired correctly.

As well as professional annual checks, internal inspections should be conducted by qualified team members at set intervals throughout the year.

Personnel responsible should complete racking awareness training and have a proven level of competency. They can then perform your internal inspections, which should be logged to satisfy HSE and audit requirements.

We pride ourselves on delivering strong aftercare support, and as a result have built strong working relationships nationwide.

Our team is available to provide ongoing support and advice to ensure you remain fully informed of all things related to your storage systems.

As an independent inspection company, we do have trusted contacts within the storage industry, all of whom are recognised SEMA-accredited providers offering installation and remedial works.

Details can be supplied should you need them if you require any remedial actions after your inspection.

The UK Rack Inspection team has worked in the storage industry for over 30 years, developing extensive knowledge and assisting clients across the UK.
