Cantilever racking systems are often used to store oversized, heavy or irregular items that are not suited to standard pallet racking, such as timber, steel, piping and sheet products. For businesses in Manchester, maintaining these systems correctly is critical to maintaining compliance and operational efficiency.

With larger loads typically stored, cantilever racking is exposed to greater stress and risk, the risk of significant damage increases if damage is left unchecked. Our qualified cantilever racking inspectors undertake thorough inspections to identify damage, highlight areas of concern, and ensure you are aware of any issues before they escalate.

As part of the inspection process, our inspector will examine your cantilever racking thoroughly to help keep your site safe, compliant, and fit for purpose. With years of hands-on experience, we can also advise on preventative measures to minimise ongoing risks, helping your business avoid unnecessary downtime and loss of revenue.

Cantilever Racking Inspections FAQs

Why do I need to have a cantilever racking inspection in Manchester?

Racking and storage equipment is covered by PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) and is recommended to be checked at least annually by a technically competent person, with a SEMA-approved inspector meeting this requirement.

This requirement is further supported by HSE guidance, including:

  • HSG76 – Warehousing and storage – A guide to health and safety
  • Workplace health, safety and welfare regulations 1992

An annual racking inspection will confirm that your racking has been installed to manufacturer specifications, has clear weight loading information displayed, is suitable and used as intended for its current application, and is in a fit state for continued use.

  • Ensuring your storage equipment is suitable and fit for purpose
  • Fully Approved Inspectors as recognised by the HSE
  • We undertake comprehensive inspections, providing a fully detailed report with locations and remedial actions listed
  • Helping you achieve and maintain compliance with Health and Safety legislation and PUWER
  • Confirm your racking installation meets manufacturer specifications
  • Ensure load notices are in line and relevant to the racking’s current configurations
  • Provide advice on areas showing repeated damage capturing issues before replacement components are required
  • Check pallets and loads are suitable for your racking system
  • Provide advice on racking-related health and safety matters to keep you compliant
  • Provide a detailed specification of your storage equipment
  • Full client debrief following the inspection, where recordings can be found and guidance given

No, this is not the case.

We always recommend requesting the inspector’s SARI number, which is a recognised identifier assigned to each SEMA-approved inspector. This should be clearly shown on your racking inspection report.

You may also come across PUWER inspectors offering damage-only reports. Our concern with this approach is questionable compliance, as critical installation and safety risks could go unnoticed.

From our perspective, if you are looking for a racking inspector, why choose a limited report when you can receive a full audit from a SEMA-approved inspector?

An annual racking inspection is recommended, and also when racking systems have been moved or altered.

Where repairs or installations have been completed by non-SEMA-approved installers (SEIRS), it is best practice that a professional inspection is carried out before the system is put back into use to ensure it has been installed or repaired correctly.

In addition to annual inspections, internal inspections should be conducted by competent staff at frequent intervals throughout the year.

These individuals should attend a racking awareness course and have a proven level of competency. They can then perform your internal inspections, which should be recorded to satisfy HSE and audit requirements.

We pride ourselves on delivering strong aftercare support, and over time have built strong working relationships throughout the country.

Our team is available to provide ongoing support and advice to ensure you remain fully informed of all things racking safety and compliance related.
