Cantilever racking systems are often used to store longer, heavier, or more awkward loads that are not suited to standard pallet racking, such as sheet materials, timber, pipes, and other oversized goods. For businesses in Derby, maintaining these systems correctly is key to meeting compliance requirements and avoiding risk.
With larger loads typically stored, cantilever racking is exposed to greater stress and risk, the potential for serious damage can be greater if issues are not identified early. Our SEMA-approved cantilever racking inspectors perform in-depth evaluations to identify damage, highlight areas of concern, and ensure you are aware of any issues before they become serious problems.
As part of the inspection process, our inspector will assess your racking system in detail to help keep your site safe, compliant and operational. With extensive industry experience, we can also recommend preventative actions to minimise ongoing risks, helping your business reduce costly downtime and operational delays.

Cantilever Racking Inspections FAQs
Why do I need to have a cantilever racking inspection in Derby?
Racking and storage equipment is governed by PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) and is expected to be checked at least annually by a suitably trained individual, of which a SEMA-approved inspector satisfies this requirement.
HSE documentation also supports this recommendation, including:
- HSG76 – Warehousing and storage – A guide to health and safety
- Workplace health, safety and welfare regulations 1992
An annual racking inspection will ensure that your racking has been installed to manufacturer specifications, has clear weight loading information displayed, is correct and being used correctly for its current application, and is in a fit state for continued use.
What are the benefits of using a SEMA approved inspector?
- We assess the compatibility and suitability of your storage systems
- Fully Approved Inspectors as recognised by the HSE
- We undertake comprehensive inspections, providing a fully detailed report with clear locations and recommended remedial actions
- Helping you achieve and maintain compliance with Health and Safety legislation and PUWER
- Confirm your racking installation meets manufacturer specifications
- Confirm load notices are correct and relevant to your current setup
- Highlight areas prone to recurring damage capturing issues before replacement components are required
- Check pallets and loads are suitable for your racking system
- Provide advice on racking-related health and safety matters to keep you compliant
- Provide a detailed specification of your storage equipment
- Full client debrief following the inspection, where recordings can be found and guidance given
Aren’t all Derby racking inspectors SEMA approved anyway?
No, this is not the case.
We always recommend requesting the inspector’s SARI number, which is an individual ID assigned to each SEMA-approved inspector. This should be included on your racking inspection report.
In addition, there are PUWER racking inspectors who offer damage report-only inspections. Our concern with this approach is questionable compliance, as important installation checks and health and safety issues may be missed.
Our view is simple, if you are looking for a racking inspector, why choose a limited report when you can receive a comprehensive inspection from a qualified inspector?
Are yearly racking inspections all that’s required?
A racking inspection should be undertaken on an annual basis, and also when racking systems have been moved or reconfigured.
If repairs or installations are carried out by a non-SEMA-approved installer (SEIRS), it is best practice that a full inspection is carried out before the system is put back into use to ensure it has been completed in line with requirements.
Alongside yearly inspections, in-house inspections should also be carried out by trained personnel at set intervals throughout the year.
Personnel responsible should complete racking awareness training and have a proven level of competency. They can then carry out your internal inspections, which should be logged to satisfy HSE and audit requirements.
Will any guidance or assistance be given after the inspection?
We strive to offer a great aftercare service to our customers, and over time have built strong working relationships nationwide.
We are always on hand to offer help and guidance to ensure you remain fully informed of all things related to your storage systems.
Although we operate as a fully independent inspection company, we do have highly recommended contacts within the storage industry, all of whom are certified SEMA members offering installation and remedial works.
We are happy to share these details if required if you require any remedial actions after your inspection.
