Cantilever racking

Cantilever racks are typically used to store oversized, heavy or irregular items that are not suited to standard pallet racking, such as timber, steel, piping and sheet products. For businesses in Coventry, keeping these systems in safe working condition is essential to safe and efficient operations.

With larger loads typically stored, cantilever racking is exposed to greater stress and risk, the likelihood of structural issues rises if damage is left unchecked. Our fully certified cantilever racking inspectors carry out detailed assessments to spot defects, flag risks, and make you aware of any concerns before they become serious problems.

As part of the inspection process, our inspector will examine your cantilever racking thoroughly to help keep your site safe, compliant and operational. With extensive industry experience, we can also advise on preventative measures to help avoid repeat issues, helping your business minimise disruption and protect revenue.

Cantilever Racking Inspections FAQs

Why do I need to have a cantilever racking inspection in Coventry?

Racking and storage equipment falls under PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) and is expected to be inspected at least annually by a qualified professional, with a SEMA-approved inspector meeting this requirement.

HSE documentation also supports this recommendation, including:

  • HSG76 – Warehousing and storage – A guide to health and safety
  • Workplace health, safety and welfare regulations 1992

An annual racking inspection will confirm that your racking has been installed correctly in line with manufacturer guidance, has appropriate weight loading information displayed, is suitable and used as intended for its current application, and is in a fit state for continued use.

  • We assess the compatibility and suitability of your storage systems
  • Fully Approved Inspectors as recognised by the HSE
  • We undertake comprehensive inspections, providing a fully detailed report with locations and remedial actions listed
  • Helping you achieve and maintain compliance with Health and Safety legislation and PUWER
  • Confirm your racking installation meets manufacturer specifications
  • Ensure load notices are in line and relevant to the racking’s current configurations
  • Provide advice on areas showing repeated damage helping prevent the need for replacement components
  • Check pallets and loads are suitable for your racking system
  • Keep you informed on racking safety regulations and best practices
  • Give an in-depth specification of the storage equipment
  • Complete client debrief after the inspection with guidance and findings explained

The answer is no.

Our advice is always to ask for the inspector’s SARI number, which is a unique identification number assigned to each SEMA-approved inspector. This should be included on your racking inspection report.

Some inspectors provide damage-only style reports under PUWER. Our concern with this approach is questionable compliance, as important installation checks and health and safety issues may be missed.

Our view is simple, if you are looking for a racking inspector, why settle for a basic overview when you can receive a complete assessment from a SEMA-approved inspector?

A racking inspection should be undertaken on an annual basis, and also when racking systems have been relocated or reconfigured.

In cases where work has been undertaken by installers who are not SEMA-approved (SEIRS), it is advised that a thorough assessment is carried out before the system is returned to operation to ensure it has been built to the correct standard.

In addition to annual inspections, internal inspections should be conducted by trained personnel at set intervals throughout the year.

Personnel responsible should complete racking awareness training and have a proven level of competency. They can then carry out your internal inspections, which should be documented to satisfy auditor requirements and HSE expectations.

We strive to offer a great aftercare service to our customers, and through this approach have built trusted partnerships nationwide.

We are always on hand to offer help and guidance to ensure you remain one step ahead of all things racking safety and compliance related.

Although we operate as a fully independent inspection company, we do have carefully selected contacts within the storage industry, all of whom are certified SEMA members offering racking repairs and installation services.

This information can be provided upon request if you require any follow-up work after your inspection.
