Cantilever racks are typically used to store oversized, heavy or irregular items that are not suited to standard pallet racking, such as sheet materials, timber, pipes, and other oversized goods. For businesses in Birmingham, maintaining these systems correctly is essential to meeting compliance requirements and avoiding risk.

With larger loads typically stored, cantilever racking is exposed to greater stress and risk, the potential for serious damage can be greater if damage is left unchecked. Our fully certified cantilever racking inspectors undertake thorough inspections to identify damage, highlight areas of concern, and ensure you are aware of any issues before they lead to failure.

Throughout the inspection, our inspector will assess your racking system in detail to help keep your site safe, compliant, and fit for purpose. With in-depth sector knowledge, we can also recommend preventative actions to minimise ongoing risks, helping your business reduce costly downtime and operational delays.

Cantilever Racking Inspections FAQs

Why do I need to have a cantilever racking inspection in Birmingham?

Racking and storage equipment falls under PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) and is recommended to be inspected at least annually by a suitably trained individual, with a SEMA-approved inspector meeting this requirement.

HSE publications also reinforce the need for annual inspections, including:

  • HSG76 – Warehousing and storage – A guide to health and safety
  • Workplace health, safety and welfare regulations 1992

An annual racking inspection will help ensure that your racking has been installed to manufacturer specifications, has clear weight loading information displayed, is correct and being used correctly for its current application, and is in a good serviceable condition.

  • We will ensure the compatibility and suitability of your storage equipment
  • Fully Approved Inspectors as recognised by the HSE
  • We undertake comprehensive inspections, providing a fully detailed report with identified issues and required corrective actions
  • Enable you to achieve and maintain compliance with regard to Health and Safety legislation & PUWER regulations
  • Check that your racking installation has been installed to the manufacturer’s specifications
  • Confirm load notices are correct and relevant to your current setup
  • Highlight areas prone to recurring damage capturing issues before replacement components are required
  • Check pallets and loads are suitable for your racking system
  • Provide advice on racking-related health and safety matters to keep you compliant
  • Provide a detailed specification of your storage equipment
  • Complete client debrief after the inspection with guidance and findings explained

The answer is no.

Our advice is always to ask for the inspector’s SARI number, which is an individual ID assigned to each SEMA-approved inspector. This should be included on your racking inspection report.

You may also come across PUWER inspectors offering damage-only reports. Our concern with this approach is questionable compliance, as key structural and safety issues may not be identified.

In our opinion, if you are looking for a racking inspector, why accept a surface-level inspection when you can receive a comprehensive inspection from a competent inspector?

Racking inspections should be carried out at least once per year, as well as when racking systems have been relocated or altered.

If repairs or installations are carried out by a non-SEMA-approved installer (SEIRS), it is best practice that a thorough assessment is carried out before the system is put back into use to ensure it has been completed in line with requirements.

Alongside yearly inspections, routine internal checks should take place by competent staff at set intervals throughout the year.

These individuals should attend a racking awareness course and have a proven level of competency. They can then perform your internal inspections, which should be recorded to satisfy auditor requirements and HSE expectations.

We pride ourselves on delivering strong aftercare support, and through this approach have built trusted partnerships nationwide.

We continue to support our clients with expert guidance to ensure you remain fully informed of all things rack-related.
